Contemporary Language

These new symptoms suggest remedies based on recent provings and clinical experience where these words were used. The goal is to bring the language of the repertory closer to the language of today’s patients, if appropriate rubrics did not yet exist. 

In the example below, a symptom that was previously empty and contained referrals to other symptoms has been updated with remedies to reflect contemporary clinical practice and proving expressions. In Synthesis Treasure Edition it looked like this:

At the end of Synthesis Adonis, we provide an empty “Personal chapter”, where remedies and symptoms can be added on the fly. Here you can add anything you feel would enhance your practice with total freedom!

Families as remedies

A true innovation to the world of large repertories - only Adonis suggests families directly within rubrics (introducing 202 families, 0,7 % of Adonis)

When looking at such a rubric, the homeopath is reminded of the remedies as well as the families that may apply. Different ways to visualize the rubric allow flexibility while working. Each Homeopath can choose their preference for working with families – we provide options to make families more or less visible and separated or integrated within the list of remedies.

• All families end with an asterisk (e.g. solanac*), so they can be easily recognized.
• There is the option to highlight families
• And options to sort them
  • Alphabetically (= integrated in the same list as remedies)
  • Top of symptom (= above remedies)
  • Bottom of symptom (= below remedies)

Synthesis Adonis includes an updated veterinary version! The veterinary information has been updated by Marc Bär (Switzerland) and his team, containing new additions and some new symptoms.

Veterinary concepts and tags facilitate access to what is highly relevant information for veterinarians.

The Vets Concepts repertory is also updated to include links to Adonis:

Kent's Treasure

Dr Currim has been organizing this information for integration into Synthesis in an extremlely meticulous way.

Kent's Treasure has lived a memorable history.
It is in fact Kent's personal copy of his repertory (2nd edition), in which he made valuable personal notes and corrections until his death The book was given to Pierre Schmidt by Frederika Gladwin.
Then it was stolen and only recuperated in India through the efforts of Dr. Ahmed Currim.

The book had been cut to small pieces and its content was reconstructed with painstaking efforts by Dr. Currim.
The "Synthesis Treasure Edition" now, for the first time, offers this information, at least that part that was added to the rubrics existing already in Synthesis 9.1.
The complete information of the Treasure will be included in Synthesis 10.

This work includes:

Vithoulkas View

The Vithoulkas View 2006 has been made available already as a Synthesis Update Logfile for Synthesis 9.1.
This information has now been integrated into Synthesis 9.2 Treasure Edition.

At the same time, we made some small corrections to the existing views: some recent provings were also shown in the "Quantum view - conservative", they are now only visible in the "Millennium View - progressive" (and in the "Full Synthesis" view).

Sherr 5 provings

The Materia Medica text of 5 recent provings has been carefully annotated by Jeremy Sherr.
Consequently the relevant information has been translated into repertory rubrics.

Saine clinical information

The additions from André Saine (Canada) are spread over all Synthesis chapters.

There are 2 types of information:

• New clinical information, based on André Saine's experience as collected between February 2002 and March 2005
• Additions from the literature as collected by André Saine during the same period

New Concepts information

There are now 17 concept chapters in Synthesis 9.2 Treasure Edition (including 5 new chapters).
They include 10.268 concepts (among others 6.146 new concepts). The new chapters are:

• women
• children
• old people
• mental health

The Dr. Luc module comes with some new concepts which are used by its wizard.
There are two types of concepts.

• First a list of core delusions, which are specific for each remedy, e.g. "repudiated by relatives; he is - sense of isolation and being avoided like a leper, even by family" popints to conium.
• The second list of concepts indicate the way patients express the concept, e.g. as in the picture above for "abandoned (forsaken / feeling of isolation)".
  Also the major remedies for this concept are highlighted.

Descriptions of pain restructured

Moving the descriptions of pain to the last level

In Kent's Repertory, as in Synthesis, the description of the pain is always written at level 3 of the symptom: "head - pain - stitching - occiput", "stomach - pain - cramping - noon", etc.
As a consequence, a lot of information is hidden in the subrubrics of these pain descriptions . Here is an example:

The rubric "eye - pain - menses - during" has 5 remedies in Synthesis 9.0.
If "menses - during" is a clear modality, it may be interesting to look at other symptoms, which have this modality as well, such as "eye - pain - sore - menses - during". In this symptom the remedy Zinc is present, which is not present in the main rubric "eye - pain - menses - during".

You would need to go and look at all descriptions of pain in the eye to check if there are other places where "menses - during" contains additional remedies. And, there are still five other remedies hidden in these symptoms:
- EYE - PAIN - burning - menses, during
- EYE - PAIN - pressing - menses, during

The total number of remedies with "pain in the eyes" and the modality "menses - during" therefore becomes 11 instead of 5. The only problem is that these remedies are scattered in four different places in the repertory.

In Synthesis 9.1, we have moved the description of pain to the last level of the symptom. These symptoms thus become:
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- burning
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- pressing
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- sore

As a consequence, these similar symptoms, as well as the related remedies, are now at one place in the Repertory. These symptoms and their remedies were seldom looked at before. Now it has become very easy to consider this information if needed.

There is only one thing to remember in order to find the new location of certain symptoms in Synthesis 9.1. This applies only to pain symptoms that contain a "description of pain" (e.g. burning, cramping, tearing, etc.).
Move the description of pain to the last level and you have the symptom in Synthesis 9.1.

More effective translation program used

More effective translation program used

Our translation program suggests a translation for any untranslated level of a symptom. For example: if a new symptom has been added with a level "eating; while", the translation program will suggest "Essen; beim".

The new translation program can consider an alternative translation if the meaning of a new level changes because it depends on a different superrubric.
This is needed to do a correct translation according to the grammar of a language: make sure that one and the same word will be translated according to the context - something any "human translator" (as opposed to the "machine translator") does without thinking.
For example:
There are two new symptoms in English such as: "menses - during" and "coughing - during". The earlier version of the translation program translated "during" always in the same way: "während". This had to be corrected during the manual revision of the translation in certain cases.
The new translation program immediately recommends to translate "menses - during" by "Menses - während" and "coughing - during" by "Husten- beim".

Another example is the translation of the level "base": this may appear in chapter mouth or in skin. The new translation program immediately suggests to translate "tongue - base" by "Zunge - Zungenwurzel" and "ulcer - base" by "Geschwur - Basis"!

This facilitates the work of the translators and allows us to release the translated versions of Synthesis much faster.

Synthesis 9.1 is printed in one volume (2,256 pages).
It contains all symptoms and remedies of the "Full Synthesis" Repertory View. The information is labeled so that its origin can easily be verified:

• classical sources and renowned authors are the main part of Synthesis 9.1
• either more recent or lesser known authors are followed by a dot
• more hypothetical information follows the first alphabetical series of remedies in a second alphabet. These more hypothetical remedies are placed between brackets at the end of the rubric.

There is a CD included with the Repertory which offers:

• Textbook of Repertory Language, with, among others:Information about the structure and language of the Repertory, e.g. explanations of more than 1.150 key symptoms

More coherent sorting of Synthesis

Sorting all symptoms in alphabetical order may appear to be the ultimate simplification, yet it isn't. There is a homeopathically meaningful relationship between certain symptoms and it makes sense to have these on the same page, rather than scattered because of the alphabet. Here is the way that Synthesis 9.1 sorts symptoms according to this new perspective.

The sorting order on all levels is the same now.
The symptoms of sides have been kept together so you can easily compare the remedies affecting the left and the right side.
The symptoms expressing time have been kept together so you can easily compare the remedies with an aggravation at certain times of the day or night.
All extensions depend from the rubric "extending to" and are sorted alphabetically.
All localizations are sorted alphabetically.
The modalities and descriptions of pain are sorted alphabetically in one alphabet. You do not need to reflect any more whether "pain - rheumatic" would be a modality or a description of pain.

The sorting order of symptoms is therefore:
- sides
- times (in chronological order)
- modalities and descriptions of pain (one alphabet)
- extensions (all subrubrics of "extending to")
- localizations (alphabetical)

In other words:- levels 3 (as "wandering" in "1HEAD - 2Pain - 3wandering") and all subsequent levels are now sorted in this same way, there are no more exceptions.- level 2 (as "Pain" in "1HEAD - 2Pain - 3wandering") is also sorted in that same way. In earlier versions of Synthesis and in Kent's Repertory this level was an exception to Kent's own sorting rules. Yet you may have become accustomed to the location of certain rubrics. Therefore you will need to be aware that the same sorting order also applies to level 2 of the symptom.One example: rubrics expressing "localization" are at the end of the chapter:

"2Nails; complaints of" is at the end of chapter Extremities
"2Hair" is at the end of chapter Head
- The chapters (level 1) are still sorted the known way.

In Synthesis 9.1, several descriptions of pain are now subrubrics of the same modality. Their remedies have been copied to the analogous superrubric, which can be used with or without these additional remedies.

As the descriptions of pain have been moved to the last level of the symptom, symptoms are sorted in a different way. In fact, symptoms expressing the same side, time, modality, extension or localization are now closer together.

Here is such a group of symptoms with the same modality 'menses - during":
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- burning
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- pressing
- EYE - PAIN - menses, during- sore

The main rubric contains 5 remedies in Synthesis 9.0. The subrubrics contain 6 additional remedies. These six remedies have been copied to " EYE - PAIN - menses, during".
As a result the rubric " EYE - PAIN - menses, during" has 11 remedies in Synthesis 9.1.

It is possible to view this rubric with or without the remedies originating from the description of pain rubrics. The "description of pain-remedies" are only shown in the Full Synthesis View. Switching to any other Repertory View will hide these additional remedies.

In the Full Synthesis view, the description of pain remedies in these superrubrics shows a down arrow as an author reference. If you click on this arrow you see the subrubric from which these remedies were taken.

The main difference between version 9.0 and 9.1 is the streamlining and restructuring of the symptoms. While this process was occurring, other collaborators have continued adding information to Synthesis.

161 remedies contain more than 50 % extra information as compared to Synthesis 9.0. The most important ones are: Aesculus glabra, Bothrops lanceolatus, Calcarea hypophosphorosa, Dulcamara*, Ferrum aceticum, Glycerinum, Guaco, Indolum, Kalium sulphuricum*, Lappa arctium, Latrodectus mactans, Mentholum, Mercurius praecipitatus ruber, Myrtus communis, Naphthalinum, Pilocarpinum, Plumbum aceticum, Polygonum hydropiperoides, Quassia amara, Radium bromatum, Ruta*, Sanguinarinum nitricum, Solidago, Spongia*, Stellaria media, Strophanthus hispidus, Triticum vulgare*, Vanilla aromatica*, Xerophyllum asphodeloides and Zincum valerianicum.

The remedies with an "*" now also contain extended proving information from Peter Friedrich, Germany.

The modality "cold air agg." may be expressed in several ways at different places in the Repertory. For example, in Synthesis 9.0:

If we restructure this information, these rubrics become:
HEAD - PAIN - cold - air agg. - cutting
HEAD - PAIN - cold - air - shooting

This would result in a cluttered pattern of rubrics with identical meanings, expressed in different ways. Therefore, we have streamlined the modality "cold air agg." throughout the Repertory into "cold - air - agg.".

In Synthesis 9.1 the above rubrics have become:
HEAD - PAIN - cold - air - agg. - cutting
HEAD - PAIN - cold - air - agg. - shooting
HEAD - PAIN - cold - air - agg. - tearing

This streamlining has been done for all modalities, localizations and, descriptions of pain. It was not necessary to do this for the sides nor for the times or extensions as there are fewer possibilities in these cases.
The Mind Chapter was not streamlined because there are too many exceptions to do this with an automated process. It will be done manually.
The Dreams Chapter was not streamlined because there are no sides, times, extensions, etc.
All other chapters have undergone this thorough cleanup.

It is true that some symptoms are not the same any more when you move the description of pain to the last level. The Synthesis 9.0 symptom:
"HEAD - PAIN - tearing - air - cold; from",, will not be:
"HEAD - PAIN - air - cold; from - tearing".
Because of the streamlining it will be: "HEAD - PAIN - cold - air - agg. - tearing" as explained above.

Most homeopaths have not been using the subrubrics of the descriptions of pain. Nevertheless, if you cannot find such a symptom that is known to you, it is because it has been streamlined.
As the modalities, localizations, and descriptions of pain are now consistently structured throughout the Repertory, it will not be long before you will be an expert in these streamlined modalities.

We went through every single rubric in the Mind chapter to decide for every subrubric whether it was appropriate to copy its remedies into the superrubric or the main rubric. This proved to be the only way to make sure that no remedies from contradictory subrubrics were copied (just imagine -- someone - or a computer - would copy the remedies from „LAUGHING - never“ into the rubric „ LAUGHING “!).

Every addition of a remedy to a superrubric is labeled with a small down arrow so that it is very easy to see that this remedy comes from a subrubric.

In addition, a new Repertory view is offered where these remedies can be hidden "Full Synthesis, rmd not copied ". If this view is selected, you will see rubrics without any remedies added from subrubrics.
The additional remedies from the subrubrics are only displayed when the " Full Synthesis, rmd copied" Repertory View is selected.

Two reasons why we offer Separate Repertories

• The integration of a repertory into Synthesis starts from the source, just as for a case or a Materia Medica. This separate repertory exists in its totality. It is from here that all links to Synthesis are made to show that the full source is integrated and how it is integrated. Transparency of the quality of our work is the first reason to offer these separate repertories to the end-user.

   

• Some of these separate repertories are voluminous and the main tool used by some homeopaths. If they wish they can use this repertory, or combination of repertories, separately along with Radar. Such smaller packages may be an easy entry for homeopaths that are not yet up to using the very voluminous Synthesis.

   

• Still, it is our goal to integrate all information into Synthesis. With version 9.0 the information of the four major b-bg repertories is already integrated. With version 9.1 the information from Boericke's "Repertory" (bro1) and Phatak's "Concise Repertory" (ptk1) will be integrated as well.   • This allows you to find all the symptoms where cold air affects headaches in one easy step. In this instance, as in many other, there are many more symptoms for this category than the known rubric "head - pain - cold air agg.".

  • The symptoms of the mind have been divided into several practical categories. In order to do so, Dorin Dragos (Rumania) has used the classification of mental symptoms of Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (new edition prepared by Betty Kirkpatrick MA, Penguin Books Ltd, London, 1999).
  • In many categories the last subcategory is "increased" or "decreased", which allows for a clear distinction of the related symptoms.
  • One example: "thinking" is divided into three possible disturbances: increased, decreased, and difficult thinking. For each category the repertory offers several precise symptoms, which are now easy to find.
• Children's Concepts (by Roberto Petrucci)
  
  • More than 2,900 children's symptoms are listed in meaningful categories by Roberto Petrucci. They include groups such as "dentition", "infectious diseases" and "development". Other concepts come straight out of the practice of Dr. Petrucci and make may unknown repertory symptoms easily visible: "attitude towards animals", "attitude towards family", "observations during the night", "non-verbal symptoms - observed by the parents", etc.
• Latent Psora (by Isidre Lara)
  
  • Hahnemann has drawn our attention to the symptoms of Latent Psora in his "Chronic Disease". Dr. Lara has collected these symptoms per chapter so that they are an easy reference during the consultation.

The major Repertory work of these pioneer homeopaths has been fully integrated into Synthesis. The new information has been documented in a very transparent way. The individualized, Kentian symptoms have been integrated seamlessly with the generalized, Bönninghausen symptoms, respecting both approaches.

Which repertories were added?

Bönninghausen is most renown for his "Therapeutic Pocket Book" (b2), but he also wrote two other repertories: the two volumes of the "Systematisch-Alfabetisches Repertorium" (b4b7). Both books contain hundreds of pages; one offers "anti-psoric, anti-syphilitic and anti-sycotic remedies" (b4) and the other "non-anti-psoric remedies" (b7).

Boger collated the work of Bönninghausen and his own work into the "Boger Bönninghausen Repertory" (bg2). He also published two more repertories: the "Synoptic Key" (bg3) and the "General Analysis" (bg11).

These six repertories have been encoded and are available in their totality, as separate repertories that can be used at the same time as Synthesis. In addition, all the information from b2, b4, b7 and bg2 has been integrated into Synthesis 9.0 and is available there as well.

• At last the handwritten additions of Bönninghausen have been added to b4 and b7.
  • Encoded from the sources with the greatest care for quality
  • The original source was used for all six repertories, whether English or German. The encoded symptoms and remedies were triple checked by different teams to ensure the highest possible accuracy and reliability.
