Why Another Repertory?
The great modern repertories contain an extraordinary wealth of information. Hundreds of thousands of rubrics and millions of remedy entries place almost the entire repertory tradition within reach.
But completeness has created a new difficulty: the labyrinth.
In a vast, finely divided repertory, the practitioner must often identify the exact wording and location of a symptom before the search has even begun. One small interpretive difference can change the entire analysis.

Standing on the Shoulders of the Masters
Since Boenninghausen’s first printed repertory in 1832, every repertory has attempted to answer one essential question:
How can a symptom be indexed without losing what makes it characteristic of the remedy?
The Synoptic Guide brings together the strongest answers developed across the repertory tradition.
It draws upon Boenninghausen’s inclusive method, Boger’s synoptic clarity, Phatak’s careful reduction, Kent’s structure, Hering and Knerr’s fidelity to characteristic symptoms, and the clinical practicality of Boericke and Clarke.
At the Boenninghausen and Boger Confluence
Boenninghausen recognised that a complete symptom contains four elements: location, sensation, modality and concomitant. Because patients rarely provide all four together, he allowed characteristic qualities to be generalised across the person.
Boger retained this inclusive foundation but distilled it. In A Synoptic Key, he placed causation, general modalities and broad pathological tendencies before local detail, allowing the remedy picture to emerge with greater ease and certainty.
Phatak carried the synoptic principle further by reducing remedy lists through careful selection.
The Synoptic Guide continues this lineage: inclusive enough not to miss the remedy, but concise enough to reveal the case.

The new Befallments chapter is inspired by Hahnemann’s own terminology and expands the familiar idea of “ailments from.”
It places life events, shocks, losses, transitions and traumas within the wider biography of the patient.
Rather than treating an event as an isolated cause, Befallments asks how that experience entered the person’s life, what it changed, and how its effects continue to shape the case.
It is a repertory of what has befallen the individual.
